AI & Future Tech: Elon Musk Takeover

Oct 16, 2024

To help you understand the WTF of AI and future tech we've got an Elon Musk takeover in this issue (He's had quite the week) and a big question for you. Let's go.

πŸš€ Tesla: Goes Full Robot

πŸ€– Bad AI: Is Optimus primed?

πŸ”₯ Reusable Rockets: A World-First Touchdown

πŸ’‘ Colossus: Creating An AI Supercluster

βœ… Question: You Need to Answer This

TESLA GETS ROBOTIC: Cars, Vans, Robo Go

Musk unveiled some ambitious initiatives at the recent 'We Robot' (geddit?) event - the RoboTaxi, Robovan and Optimus assistant robot - each signalling Tesla's shift from a car company towards a broader autonomous products, AI and robotics organisation.

Combined, these could signal the beginnings of several shifts - downward in vehicle ownership, upward in sustainability, but also throws up data privacy questions - where exactly is all this gathered information going to be used.

There are not insignificant regulatory hurdles to overcome on safety and privacy to make this a reality - as well as the CEO's sometimes ludicrous timelines to factor in. However, these are big moves.

What it means: This is at heart a massive data play. These combined products will produce a huge amount of data for Musks' companies - along with the live social graph of X (Twitter), Grok LLM with X.ai potentially orchestrating it all.

We hear a lot about OpenAI leading AI but sleeping on these Musk data-driven moves is risky. It also needs some sleight of hand to bring to life. Speaking of which...

ELON’S ROBOTS: Optimus Primed

A robot walks into a bar...(Joke at the end, short but worth it).

The latest Optimius robot assistant was demoed as part of the event - showing it serving drinks at a bar - but behind the scenes actual humans seemed to be pulling the strings.

Footage from the event suggests the robots had substantial 'backstage help' raising doubts about its actual autonomy.

What it means: Before you invest in buying (or building) AI for serious tasks, make sure it’s more than just a showy demo. Talk to us about real-world use cases that are working right now.

Robot says. "Yet"

WORLD FIRST: Reuseable Rocket Landing

Exhibit #2 of Musks' big week is a doozy.

SpaceX has hit another milestone—achieving a world first by safely landing a rocket back on its launch pad using aptly named 'Mechazilla' giant arms. This marks a historic step in reusable rocket technology, pushing space exploration closer to becoming more cost-effective.

The precision landing is something else (I tried something similar with Mechazilla Meccano in the 80s and still have the scars to prove it).

  • Potentially speeds up satellite communications.
  • Increased launch frequency means more data and safer exploration.
  • Are we heading to Mars? seems a bit closer.

What it means: From improving global supply chain management through enhanced satellite tracking and AI to developing new products that can be manufactured in microgravity, the potential applications could be massive.

COLOSSUS: AI Supercluster Is Go

Exhibit #3: Isn't too shabby either, as Colossus AI Supercluster is Unveiled

Musk's xAI just launched "Colossus" in Tennessee, featuring 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs in one of the most powerful AI clusters worldwide.

It's designed to train advanced models - i.e. Grok 3, which is scheduled for late 2024. This move aligns with the ambition for a "compute gigafactory" that could scale to 200,000 GPUs.

  • AI Powerhouse: Sets a new benchmark in GPU capacity.
  • Grok 3: Could rival/surpass OpenAI's capabilities by end of year.
  • Expansion Plans: Potential to double in size.

What it means: Musk is serious about AI supremacy, and Colossus could radically speed up AI development. Having another frontier model (albeit not available for all users currently) could bring down cost and give us more options in deploying AI solutions outside of OpenAI, Google, Amazon.

For your business, get practical now with AI company training and get your teams up to speed.

THE BIG QUESTION: Are You Taking Enough Risk?

In one week, Musk has:

  • Launched a massive AI supercluster.
  • Unveiled the Cybercab, Robovan and Optimus autonomous robots.
  • Landed rockets back on launch pads for the first time ever.

Each is a high-risk, high-reward leap tackling AI, space, and autonomous driving at a pace that's innovative and controversial (let's face it he's not everyone's cup of tea). BUT The challenges - privacy, safety, tech hurdles - are real, and the continuous push-through raises a key question for leaders:

Are you playing it safe, or truly looking around corners? Are you taking enough calculated risks?

Give us a shout if you want to talk AI, risk, challenges and ROI.
