What's happened now? It's taken a routine voicemail from a Land Rover garage in Scotland and turned it into a text message for the ages.

A woman from Dunfermline received what should have been a polite invitation to a car event. Instead, Apple’s AI decided she needed to be asked if she’d “been able to have sex” before being casually called a “piece of s**t.”

What went wrong? Too much garage banter in the background? A grudge against Scottish accents (tbf if it was trained on this, fair dues). Apple not quite at the AI races yet? Probably all of the above.

A Chinese startup has introduced Manus, a fully autonomous AI agent capable of independently executing complex tasks - and apparently beating leading assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini on popular AI benchmarks.

• Autonomous Task Execution: It can independently manage intricate workflows, such as sorting résumés, analysing stock trends, and building websites.
• Multi-Agent Architecture: Utilises a multi-agent framework (using models like Claude and Qwen) with specialised sub-agents handling different components of a task.
• Performance Benchmarks: Manus has reportedly achieved state-of-the-art performance in the GAIA benchmark, surpassing other models in real-world problem-solving capabilities. ​

Context:

Is this another DeepSeek-esque breakout for Chinese AI platforms? Increasingly we're seeing smaller outlier companies launching agentic tools as good as the larger models. With each new release we're being promised more complex workflows are possible, giving us highly productive ways to do more with less (people?).

More choice is generally a good thing, though in production these tools are often not quite as out-of-the-box ready for detailed tasks as claimed. Still, the agentic era is already here. Time to test.
