BAD AI: Lies Damn Lies

OpenAI's latest reasoning models have been hallucinating like they've licked the wrong sort of toad.

Nice opener. Go on then, what happened?

​

OpenAI’s shiny new o3 and o4 models? Somewhat fantasists. They’ve managed to consistently lie about things like coding offline on a pretend computer (sentience, is that you?), invented prime numbers, and blamed typos on a 'clipboard glitch'.

​

To top it off, it’s actually hallucinating more than previous models. So, is thisSpite? Ego? Sam having a laugh? AI warming itself up for the TED talk it plans to give after the fall of civilisation? Who knows.

​

What we do know: you’d be wise to double-check outputs before it gaslights you, deletes your job, and has you spell-checking its delusions on your way out the door.

Duolingo is going AI-first, big time. CEO Luis von Ahn just dropped a memo on LinkedIn outlining a full-on shift: Hiring fewer contractors, freezing headcount and embedding AI across every area of the business.

What they're doing:

  • AI replacing contractors: Tasks previously handled by humans to be done with AI models.
  • Hiring freeze (unless AI can’t do it): New roles must prove they can’t be automated.
  • AI in performance reviews: Staff will be evaluated on how well they use AI in their daily work.
  • Efficiency over everything: Fewer humans, more automation, less busy work.
